“There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.” – Dorothy Dandridge
In honor of International Women’s Day, consider showing your support of girls and women in one or all of these special ways!
1. Show your support.
- Throw an online fundraiser annually on your birthday for an organization that lifts up women.
- Hold a diaper or formula drive in your office and donate to a worthy non-profit.
- Donate to a food bank near you.
2. Help a mom in need.
- As it is estimated that 76% of educational roles in the United States are women, consider finding ways to help fund a classroom in need of supplies.
- Donate gently used professional clothing to a clothing closet in your city to help jumpstart someone else’s career.
- Find an organization that provides clean water to women in need worldwide.
3. Get moving! Join a walk for a cause or look for unique ways to help.
- Although many walks have gone virtual over the last year, you can still look for ways to get out and join a movement.
- Form a team with your friends or in your workplace in honor of a worthy cause and see who can raise the most money or collect the most supplies for an organization that helps women.
- Look for ways to help women in need in your neighborhood on apps like Nextdoor. Can you pick up trash in an elderly or disabled neighbor’s yard this spring or shovel a sidewalk over the winter?
4. Encourage future generations.
- Introduce ways for young girls to pursue their interests. Whether joining a STEM based club at their school, finding a woman they can job shadow each year on take your daughter to work day, or helping them become leaders among their friends, there are so many ways to set them up for future success.
- Talk to girls about leadership and allow them to lead when they can gain valuable experience with problem solving in real situations.
- Provide young women with options for mentorship programs as they start to pursue possible career paths in high school or college.
5. Tell the women in your life that you care.
- Treat a new mom or friend with a surprise drink from Scooter’s Coffee. It’s a bit obvious for a coffee business to suggest this, but it doesn’t make it any less impactful.
- Offer to take a friend’s kids for a walk, or for a whole Saturday so they can take an exercise class they’ve been wanting to try or have some time to read without interruptions.
- Write a thank you letter to a woman educator who made a difference in your life. Tell them why you’ll never forget them.
How will you support women around the world today?
